A fire in a Parkdale apartment building sent two people to hospital and prompted the rescue of two dogs on Friday afternoon.

Toronto emergency crews were called shortly before 5 p.m. to the area of King Street and Beaty Avenue. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames spreading across balcony areas at the rear of the walk-up building.

Firefighters used multiple hose lines to battle the blaze, working through three floors to contain and force the fire out of the structure. Officials say all residents were able to evacuate safely.

Two individuals were taken to hospital for assessment, while two dogs were rescued from inside the building. Their condition has not been released.

The fire has since been brought under control, and crews remained on scene to continue investigation. The cause and origin of the fire are still unknown.
