An Oshawa man has admitted guilt in connection with a fatal crash that killed a father of three and left several family members seriously injured.
Jaiwin Kirubananthan pleaded guilty in a Newmarket court to dangerous driving causing death, three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, and failing to remain at the scene. He was 18 at the time of the August 3, 2025 collision.
The crash, which occurred on Highway 48 near St. John Sideroad and Ballantrae Commons, claimed the life of Andrew Cristillo, a 35-year-old father. His three young daughters suffered life-altering injuries, while his wife, Christina Cristillo, was also hurt.
Police said the driver fled but was located and arrested shortly afterward. Investigators also confirmed the accused had been involved in a previous January 2025 incident involving a police vehicle transporting Doug Ford, for which he also faced a dangerous driving charge.
Following the crash, the victim’s family launched a petition calling for stricter penalties for dangerous driving, gathering more than 43,000 signatures. In response, Ford pledged legislative action, leading to a proposed bill known as Andrew’s Law.
The bill, introduced in November and currently in second reading at Queen’s Park, would impose lifetime driving bans for those convicted of dangerous driving causing death. It also proposes immediate 90-day licence suspensions for suspected dangerous driving and tougher fines.
Outside court, the victim’s brother, Jordan Cristillo, called the proposed changes common sense and urged swift passage. He emphasized the need for accountability and reform, saying justice should both penalize the offender and help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
