Authorities are looking into a serious crash that left a 12-year-old injured and hospitalized on Monday evening.

According to provincial police, the incident occurred around 5 p.m. when the youth attempted to cross Highway 17 on a dirt bike while travelling along the Algonquin Trail. The child, who was riding alongside a parent on another dirt bike, collided with a westbound SUV.

The injured youth was initially transported by ground ambulance and later airlifted to CHEO in Ottawa with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The SUV’s driver and passenger were not hurt.

The highway, located north of Arnprior, was closed for several hours while crews responded and investigators examined the scene. Police continue to investigate and are asking witnesses to provide any information.
