Highway 17 in eastern Ontario fully reopened late Thursday after a fiery tanker truck incident forced prolonged closures near Pembroke.

The truck, which was transporting jet fuel to Garrison Petawawa, caught fire around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday near White Water Road. Firefighters from Laurentian Valley Township and Garrison Petawawa responded within minutes and found the truck engulfed in flames.

Fire Chief Tim Sutcliffe said the fuel had already vented, creating an intense fireball that quickly spread toward nearby brush. Crews focused first on stopping the fire from reaching the surrounding forest before containing the burning truck.

Emergency teams stayed on scene for nearly 12 hours, allowing the fuel to burn off before fully extinguishing the fire around 7 a.m. Thursday.

No injuries were reported. Eastbound lanes reopened shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, and westbound lanes reopened later in the day.
