One person has died following a fire at a seniors’ residence in downtown Toronto late Sunday night.

Toronto firefighters were called to a high-rise building near Yonge and Carlton streets shortly before 10 p.m. Fire Chief Jim Jessop said crews located the blaze inside an eighth-floor apartment.

According to officials, firefighters were forced to break into the unit, where they encountered intense heat and thick black smoke. During an initial search of the apartment, crews found a resident in bed without vital signs.

The victim was turned over to paramedics and later pronounced dead.

Authorities say the fire has since been extinguished, and the scene remains under investigation. Toronto Fire investigators are examining the cause, origin, and circumstances surrounding the deadly incident, while Toronto police and the Office of the Fire Marshal have also been notified.

LOFT Community Services, which provides support services in the building, said it was deeply saddened by the tragedy and extended condolences to those affected.
