Toronto police have arrested a man following a violent off-leash dog attack that killed a small dog and injured its owner in the city’s west end.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon at around 4:10 p.m. near Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue West, where police say a larger brown pit bull mix, reportedly unrestrained, suddenly attacked a smaller dog being walked by its owner. The smaller dog died as a result of the attack, and the owner suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police initially issued a public safety warning after the attack, noting the dog had not been located. Hours later, investigators announced the arrest of 40-year-old Mohamoud Abdiwa Ahmed.

He is facing multiple charges, including criminal negligence causing bodily harm, obstruction-related offences, and violations under the Dog Owners’ Liability Act.

Authorities say the attacking dog is still missing and are continuing to work with animal services to locate it. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Update – Investigators confirmed the dog was found and safely captured Thursday evening at approximately 8 p.m. Officials have not yet announced what will happen to the animal next.
