Ontario Provincial Police are warning drivers about the dangers of improperly installed tires after another wheel detached from a vehicle on Highway 417 in Ottawa.

The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday near Parkdale Avenue when a loose tire crossed the highway median and struck two vehicles travelling westbound. No injuries were reported.

Police said the driver told officers he had recently installed the tires himself and failed to properly re-tighten them after installation. Under Ontario law, losing a wheel while driving results in a mandatory court appearance and carries a minimum fine of $2,000.

The incident comes just days after a similar incident on Highway 417 left another driver seriously injured, raising renewed concerns about tire safety and vehicle maintenance.
