A 38-year-old man has been charged after allegedly driving a stolen school bus into a barrier at a McDonald’s drive-thru in Ajax late on May 11, according to Durham Regional Police.
The incident occurred near Taunton Road West and Westney Road North at approximately 11:30 p.m. Police said they received reports of a suspected impaired driver operating a school bus erratically before attempting to enter the drive-thru, where the vehicle struck a barrier.
When officers arrived, they stopped the bus and arrested the driver, identified as Tanner Jon Davis, who has no fixed address. Investigators said he showed signs of impairment.
Police allege the bus had been stolen earlier from a bus yard in North York after the suspect reportedly broke into the property. Authorities believe several parked vehicles may also have been damaged during the incident. Investigators further claim radios and vehicle keys were taken from the yard.
Davis now faces five charges, including impaired driving, two probation violations, and two counts related to possession of stolen property valued at more than $5,000. He remained in custody pending a bail hearing.
Investigators are asking anyone with information or dash camera footage to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
