A fatal fire at a remote island property near Greater Sudbury has left one person dead and another seriously injured, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.

Police say emergency crews were called shortly after midnight May 17 to a structure fire on an island in Little Gabodin Lake. The area can only be reached by portage through Panache Lake, prompting authorities to deploy specialized rescue teams and aviation support to access the scene.

Investigators confirmed a 26-year-old from Sudbury died at the location, while a 27-year-old sustained serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The investigation remains active with assistance from the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal. Officials have not yet disclosed the cause of the fire or whether charges may be laid.
