A driver has died after becoming trapped inside a vehicle that caught fire following a crash in South Glengarry early Monday morning, according to Ontario Provincial Police.
Officers from the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry detachment were called to a vehicle in a ditch shortly after 5 a.m. When police arrived, they discovered an unconscious man inside the vehicle.
Investigators say officers attempted to rescue the driver, but the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames before they could remove him. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three officers were treated for smoke inhalation during the incident.
Police have not yet released the identity of the victim as efforts to confirm next of kin continue.
County Road 34 near Concession 2 north of Lancaster was temporarily closed while investigators examined the scene.
