A six-year-old girl has died after being struck by a vehicle in the Minnow Lake area, according to Greater Sudbury Police Service.

Police said the incident happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. on May 19 at the Palace Place Co-Op on Second Avenue. Emergency crews performed CPR and other lifesaving efforts at the scene before the child was rushed to hospital with critical injuries. She was later pronounced dead.

Investigators say the girl had just exited a school bus when the collision occurred in a residential parking area within the housing complex.

Authorities confirmed the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

Police expressed condolences to the child’s family and everyone impacted by the tragedy. Officers are continuing to collect witness accounts and examine available evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

Update – Following the investigation, police charged a 58-year-old woman with careless driving causing death and operating a vehicle with cannabis readily accessible. The accused is expected to appear in court on Aug. 4 to respond to the charges.

The 6-year-old girl was later identified as Havyn Winter Kay through an online fundraising campaign established to support her family.
