A man died Wednesday morning after being struck while attempting to cross railway tracks near Simcoe Street and Hall Street in Oshawa.
Durham Regional Police were called to the area around 8:30 a.m., just south of the Simcoe Street bridge, where officers and emergency crews attempted life-saving measures after locating the victim near the tracks. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident occurred in an area heavily impacted by ongoing infrastructure projects and bridge closures tied to future GO Transit expansion work. The Simcoe Street bridge was closed to the public in January as part of preparations for the future Central Oshawa GO station, while additional bridge work on Farewell Street and the permanent closure of the Albert Street bridge have significantly altered traffic patterns in nearby neighbourhoods.
Residents in the area have raised concerns in recent months about congestion, confusion and an increase in close calls and collisions as drivers and pedestrians navigate detours and restricted access routes.
