A major stretch of Highway 17 near the Highway 11 junction in Shabaqua was shut down for hours Saturday after a serious crash involving two vehicles.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police, officers responded to the collision around 11:19 a.m. on May 23. The crash involved a transport truck and a passenger vehicle.

Authorities closed Highway 17 in both directions between Sistonen’s Corner and Shabaqua Corners while emergency crews worked at the scene. Partial traffic flow resumed shortly after 3 p.m. using alternating lanes, and the highway fully reopened by 7:15 p.m.

Police said the driver of the passenger vehicle was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries, while the passenger was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The investigation remains active. Police are asking witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage who has not yet spoken with investigators to contact the OPP.
