An Alberta truck driver and the commercial carrier they worked for are facing a total of 16 charges after a crash involving several vehicles in North Bay.

Police say the collision happened around 6:10 p.m. on May 28 at the intersection of Highway 11 and Airport Road when a southbound commercial motor vehicle allegedly ran a red light. The transport truck struck one passenger vehicle before continuing southbound and colliding with several others. One person suffered minor injuries.

Following the crash, Ministry of Transportation officials carried out a detailed inspection of the truck and discovered multiple serious mechanical defects. The tractor unit was deemed unsafe, removed from service and had its licence plates seized.

The 29-year-old driver from Waskatenau, Alberta, has been charged with 10 offences, including careless driving, operating an unsafe commercial vehicle, failing to complete required inspections, driving with serious vehicle defects, operating with defective brakes, running a red light and driving without a valid CVOR certificate.

A Brampton-based trucking company also faces six charges related to permitting an unsafe commercial vehicle to operate, failing to meet inspection and performance requirements, and allowing the truck to be driven with inadequate braking systems and other critical defects.
