Fire crews are battling a large and difficult blaze at a scrap metal yard in Brampton near Intermodal Drive and Goreway Drive.
Emergency responders from Peel Regional Police and Brampton Fire and Emergency Services were called to the site at about 4:18 p.m. after reports of heavy smoke and active flames spreading through piles of scrap material.
Thick black smoke has been rising from the property and is visible across a wide area, including from Toronto Pearson International Airport, though airport operations have not been affected.
Crews were met with intense flames burning deep within stacked scrap materials, making the blaze especially difficult to extinguish. At the height of the response, eleven fire trucks were deployed to the scene. Firefighters are now using drone technology to identify remaining hot spots, with most of the fire concentrated in the centre of the yard.
Police also assisted with traffic control as congestion built during rush hour, largely due to drivers slowing to view the scene. Officers urged the public to avoid the area, noting safety concerns and limited visibility around the active fire zone.
Officials confirmed no injuries have been reported. Residents nearby were advised to keep windows closed and limit ventilation intake due to heavy smoke. Crews expect to remain on scene for an extended, ongoing operation as they work to fully extinguish the “long-duration” fire.
The cause, origin, and circumstances of the fire remain under investigation.
