A 27-year-old woman was hospitalized in stable condition after her SUV plunged approximately 16 feet into a construction pit behind Bayfield Mall in Barrie on Wednesday evening.
Emergency crews, including firefighters, police, and paramedics, responded to the scene shortly after 7:15 p.m. Firefighters rescued the driver from the vehicle, and paramedics assisted in bringing her out of the excavation area using a ladder. She was then transported to hospital for treatment.
Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs contributed to the incident. Officials also noted that the construction site appeared to have appropriate safety measures in place, including fencing around the perimeter.
The SUV was removed from the pit by tow operators later that evening. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
