Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a fleeing driver was seriously injured in a crash near Peterborough on Friday morning.

According to the Special Investigations Unit, police responded around 11 a.m. to reports of an erratic driver in a Dodge Charger in the Cavan-Monaghan area. An officer attempted a traffic stop using emergency lights and sirens, but the driver allegedly fled.

The SIU says the officer briefly followed the vehicle before the driver was involved in multiple collisions and ultimately ended up in a ditch on County Road 10, south of Highway 115.

The driver was airlifted to a Toronto hospital with critical injuries.
