A 16-year-old boy was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre after a serious single-vehicle crash in Whitby on Thursday evening.

Durham Regional Police said an Audi sedan was travelling north on Duffs Road, south of Townline Road, around 8:30 p.m. when the driver lost control, left the roadway, and the vehicle caught fire. Officers arriving at the scene found two occupants trapped inside.

The 16-year-old initially suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported by AirOrnge to a Toronto hospital. Police later reported that his condition had improved and is now considered stable. A 17-year-old occupant was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The Durham Police Collision Investigation Unit examined the scene, and nearby roads remained closed for several hours while investigators gathered evidence and determined the circumstances of the crash.
