An Ottawa driver has been charged after a crash on Highway 60 in North Algona-Wilberforce Township that occurred when a vehicle slowed or stopped to allow a turtle to cross the road.

Ontario Provincial Police said the incident happened shortly after 6 p.m. on June 10. Investigators determined that an eastbound vehicle reduced speed or came to a stop in the live traffic lane, leaving a following vehicle unable to stop in time and resulting in a rear-end collision.

No serious injuries were reported, but the highway remained closed for several hours while crews investigated and cleared the scene.

Police have charged the Ottawa driver with careless driving and are reminding motorists that stopping in an active traffic lane can create dangerous conditions and increase the risk of collisions.
