Three people were taken to hospital for assessment after a house fire filled an Elora home with heavy smoke on Friday morning.

Centre Wellington Fire Rescue responded to the blaze at a home near the intersection of Colborne Street and Wilson Crescent around 9 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find thick black and brown smoke pouring from the house and attached garage. Approximately 20 to 25 firefighters launched an aggressive attack and brought the fire under control within about 30 minutes.

Two residents were safely evacuated before the fire spread, while a bystander who helped them escape was also taken to hospital as a precaution for smoke inhalation.

Fire officials believe the blaze likely originated in the garage because of the extensive damage, but the exact cause remains under investigation. A damage estimate has not yet been released.

The displaced residents are receiving assistance from the Red Cross, while neighbours have rallied to support them by helping recover sentimental belongings and offering aid in the aftermath of the fire.
