Two pedestrians were killed after being struck by a vehicle in Scarborough on Friday afternoon.
Emergency crews responded to the intersection of Birchmount Road and Lawrence Avenue East around 1:50 p.m. Police said a 79-year-old woman driving a purple Toyota allegedly ran a red light, collided with a grey Mitsubishi, and then struck two pedestrians waiting on the northwest sidewalk. The impact also knocked down a utility pole.
The victims, a 64-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman, were pronounced dead at the scene. Police are working to notify their next of kin.
Three occupants of the Toyota, including two women and a six-year-old girl, were taken to hospital with minor injuries. The 55-year-old Mitsubishi driver was also transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Toronto police continue to investigate the crash and are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward. The intersection remained closed for several hours while officers examined the scene.
