A fatal multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 near Townline Road in Cambridge is under investigation after one person died and 15 others were injured.
The collision occurred around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, involving approximately nine vehicles and a transport truck. According to Ontario Provincial Police, the transport truck struck the rear of slowing or stopped traffic, triggering the chain-reaction crash.
One driver, a 44-year-old man from Kitchener, was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries but later died. In total, 16 people were taken to hospital, though the severity of injuries to the other 15 victims has not been released.
The transport truck driver was uninjured and arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving. However, police said no charges have been laid, and the driver has been released unconditionally while the investigation continues. Highway 401 lanes reopened around 11 p.m. Saturday.
