Three people were taken to hospital after a lithium-ion battery fire involving an e-scooter sparked a two-alarm blaze at a Scarborough high-rise early Sunday morning.
Fire crews responded around 7:30 a.m. to the building near Lawrence Avenue East and Morningside Avenue, where they encountered heavy smoke on the second floor.
Paramedics said five people who were inside the affected unit left before they could be assessed. Three residents from neighbouring units were treated at the scene and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop said the blaze was caused by a lithium-ion battery linked to the micromobility device, renewing warnings about the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.
