A large barn fire near Simcoe has killed approximately 20,000 hogs, according to Norfolk County Fire officials.
Emergency crews were called to the farm on Highway 3 shortly before 6:45 a.m. Tuesday after the barn became fully engulfed in flames. About 40 firefighters from eight stations responded, using multiple pieces of equipment to battle the blaze.
No injuries were reported. Officials say the property owner is insured, and while the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, it is not considered suspicious at this time.
Highway 3 was closed between Charlotteville East Quarter Line and Windham East Quarter Line Road as crews worked at the scene. The investigation into the cause of the fire will begin once conditions are safe.
