Two people sustained serious injuries following a three-vehicle collision in Whitby on July 17, according to Durham Regional Police.
The crash occurred shortly after 2:15 p.m. near Lake Ridge Road and Highway 407. Investigators say a Mitsubishi SUV exiting the Highway 407 off-ramp entered the intersection, causing a southbound Hyundai SUV to swerve into the path of a northbound Dodge minivan, resulting in a head-on collision.
The 24-year-old Hyundai driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre. A 77-year-old passenger in the minivan was taken to the same trauma centre with critical but non-life-threatening injuries, while the 69-year-old driver of the minivan was treated locally for minor injuries.
The intersection remained closed for several hours as investigators examined the scene. Police are asking anyone with dashcam footage, surveillance video, or other information related to the collision to come forward.
