A 22-year-old Sault Ste. Marie man is facing several criminal and traffic charges after police say an early morning crash led to the discovery of a stolen vehicle investigation.
Officers responded to a single-vehicle collision at the intersection of McNabb Street and Pentagon Boulevard around 3:20 a.m. on July 17, where they found a vehicle that had struck a utility pole. The driver was initially charged with careless driving and failing to surrender a driver’s licence under the Highway Traffic Act.
About five hours later, the same vehicle was reported stolen from the 100 block of Churchill Boulevard. Police say their investigation determined the accused had allegedly stolen the vehicle before crashing it earlier that morning.
The suspect was later arrested and now faces criminal charges including theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and mischief over $5,000. He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 5.
