A fatal collision on Highway 17 near Sturgeon Falls is under investigation after a mobility scooter rider was struck by a pickup truck Saturday night.

The crash occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Aug. 1 near Landfill Site Road, where Ontario Provincial Police, firefighters, and paramedics responded to the scene.

The 73-year-old mobility scooter operator, a resident of Sturgeon Falls, was rushed to hospital but later died from injuries sustained in the collision.

Investigators closed Highway 17 for roughly five hours to investigate the crash scene before reopening the roadway.

The OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement unit is supporting the investigation, which remains active. Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or captured it on dashcam to come forward and assist investigators.
