A workplace incident in Markham has claimed the life of a man, prompting an investigation by Ontario’s Ministry of Labour.
York Regional Police were called Thursday after receiving reports of an injured person near McCowan Road and Highway 7. Police have not released details about how the man was injured. He suffered serious injuries and was later pronounced dead.
The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development confirmed it was notified of a workplace fatality and sent an inspector to the scene. The ministry’s investigation remains underway.
The incident also resulted in a major power outage in the area. More than 6,000 customers were without electricity at the height of the disruption, with power restored shortly after 4 p.m.
Alectra Utilities attributed the outage to a vehicle striking equipment at about 11:50 a.m., while York police said the outage was not caused by a collision. The circumstances surrounding the workplace incident and the conflicting accounts of the outage remain under investigation.
