A four-vehicle collision brought eastbound traffic on Highway 401 in Southwold to a standstill for more than two hours Thursday evening.

Emergency crews were called to the crash east of Union Road shortly after 6 p.m. Police shut down the eastbound lanes at Union Road while officers investigated and assessed the situation.

The closure left a number of motorists stuck on the highway as crews worked to remove the damaged vehicles and debris.

The highway reopened at approximately 8:22 p.m. Police have not released details about any injuries, the cause of the collision or potential charges.
