Ottawa firefighters contained an overnight garage fire at a multi-unit residence on Lisgar Street, preventing the flames from spreading to the rest of the building.
Ottawa Fire Services responded to the 500 block of Lisgar Street shortly after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday following several 911 calls about heavy black smoke coming from the two-storey property.
Crews determined the fire was concentrated in an attached garage, where two vehicles were parked. Residents told firefighters that everyone had safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
Firefighters had to remove a fence to access the rear of the garage, where the fire was most intense. Crews also opened sections of the exterior siding and plywood to expose the flames and allow them to attack the fire directly.
Another team searched the building to confirm it was empty.
The fire was brought under control shortly before 2:05 a.m. Because firefighters stopped the blaze from spreading and air quality returned to normal, the three tenants and their two dogs were eventually allowed back into the home.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
