A large sinkhole has shut down Jones Avenue in Toronto’s Riverdale area, creating traffic disruptions and forcing TTC buses onto a detour Wednesday morning.
The roadway collapsed around 7:30 a.m., prompting the closure of Jones Avenue in both directions between Boultbee Avenue and Myrtle Avenue. No injuries were reported.
The City of Toronto said an initial assessment points to a watermain break as the cause of the collapse. Crews are working to repair the damage, but there is currently no timeline for when the street will reopen.
TTC buses are being rerouted around the closure, using Gerrard Street East, Greenwood Avenue and Danforth Avenue.
The incident comes one day after another sinkhole opened in East York near O’Connor Drive and St. Clair Avenue East. In that case, a vehicle became trapped in the roadway, with officials also attributing the collapse to a watermain break.
