Two 22-year-olds were injured Tuesday morning after a vehicle crashed into a hydro pole at a southwest Ottawa intersection, leaving both occupants trapped inside.
Ottawa Fire Services was called to the collision at Old Richmond and Fallowfield roads around 5:23 a.m. after the vehicle lost control and struck the pole, which broke and caused extensive damage to the car.
Firefighters first confirmed that no hydro lines had been cut before stabilizing the vehicle. Crews then used specialized equipment to open the windshield and part of the roof, allowing them to remove the first occupant on a backboard.
The second occupant remained trapped by an arm and required firefighters to lift the vehicle before they could safely remove the person.
Ottawa police said the male driver suffered life-threatening injuries, while the female passenger sustained serious injuries.
Fallowfield Road was expected to remain closed between Eagleson Road and Richmond Road for several hours while the damaged hydro pole was repaired. Police are continuing to investigate and are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact them.
