A teenage driver was seriously injured after an SUV crashed through a fence and came to rest upside down in a ditch near Barrhaven early Wednesday morning.
Ottawa firefighters were called to the crash near Cedarview Road and Lytle Avenue around 3:47 a.m., after police reported that the driver was trapped inside the vehicle.
The SUV had landed on its roof roughly nine metres from the roadway and became entangled in a livestock fence. Fire crews cut through the fence and nearby vegetation to reach the vehicle.
The teen, who was in his late teens, was found with one arm pinned beneath the roof. Firefighters stabilized the SUV before using hydraulic rescue equipment to free him. Crews also searched the surrounding area with a thermal imaging camera to ensure no other occupants had been thrown from the vehicle.
The driver was freed shortly after 4:15 a.m. and taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
