Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after two people died in a single-vehicle crash following an attempted traffic stop in South Frontenac.

The incident began shortly after midnight on Sept. 6, when officers with the Ontario Provincial Police’s Frontenac Detachment responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Bedford Road. The Special Investigations Unit says the vehicle had been reported stolen.

When an officer approached the vehicle, the male driver allegedly fled. A short time later, the vehicle crashed on Bedford Road near Salmon Lake Road and was found in a wooded area.

The driver and a female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

The SIU has assigned three investigators, two forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Bedford Road remains closed between Mason Lane and Lady Bush Lane while the investigation continues.
