A downtown Oshawa funeral home has been destroyed after a suspicious fire broke out early Monday morning.
Oshawa Fire Services was called shortly before 4 a.m. after paramedics in the area detected smoke. Firefighters traced the smoke to McIntosh-Anderson-Kellam Funeral Home on King Street East, where they found an active blaze.
The building suffered extensive damage and was deemed a total loss. Crews used heavy equipment to demolish portions of the structure and eliminate safety hazards while firefighters continued to extinguish remaining hotspots.
No injuries have been reported. Officials have not confirmed whether the funeral home’s fire detection or suppression systems were operating at the time of the incident.
The funeral home confirmed the fire and said measures were being taken to secure the property. It also indicated that the situation was under control and that the safety of families, employees and the broader community remained a priority.
The fire is being treated as suspicious, and an investigation into its cause is underway.
