A 54-year-old Niagara police officer is facing multiple charges after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop and later crashing in Niagara-on-the-Lake Thursday night.
Niagara Regional Police responded to reports of a suspected impaired driver around 8:20 p.m. and located a grey Dodge Ram pickup near Glendale Avenue and Taylor Road.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle at approximately 8:46 p.m., but police say the driver failed to pull over. A pursuit was briefly initiated before officers called it off because of the driver’s reportedly dangerous and erratic driving.
Five minutes later, officers were dispatched to a collision near York Road and Four Mile Creek Road. The pickup had struck another vehicle, according to police.
The driver, identified as 54-year-old Paul-Andre Seguin, was arrested and taken to hospital with serious injuries. No one else was hurt.
Seguin, a Niagara police officer with 21 years of service, faces charges including impaired operation, flight from police, dangerous operation, refusing an alcohol demand and failing to obey a red light.
He was released on a Form 10 Undertaking and has been suspended with pay.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
