Two people were taken to hospital Monday morning after a fire broke out inside an apartment in downtown Toronto.
Emergency crews were called to the building shortly after 7:15 a.m. after reports of a two-alarm fire. Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from a unit and quickly began evacuating residents while working to extinguish the blaze.
A man suffered burns and smoke inhalation and was transported to hospital. A woman was also taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.
Fire officials said the flames were knocked down within roughly 15 minutes and remained confined to the apartment where the fire began. Nearby units were not affected, and the building’s fire alarms were functioning.
Most residents were able to return home soon after the fire was contained, although those closest to the affected unit remained displaced. The apartment’s occupant has been temporarily displaced.
Jarvis Street was closed between Gerrard and Dundas streets during the emergency response but has since reopened.
