Fire crews quickly extinguished a blaze near railway tracks in Kitchener on Monday evening after thick black smoke spread over Victoria Street North.

Five fire crews responded to the scene behind Weston Foods at approximately 6:15 p.m. Investigators determined the fire appeared to have started in a pile of scrap wood and railway ties on Wellington Street.

Despite the heavy smoke, damage was estimated at less than $200, with no concerns about nearby structures.

No injuries were reported, and neither Waterloo Regional Police nor the Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating the incident.
