A 2-year-old girl was critically injured after a vehicle struck a daycare worker and five children in a residential area of Oshawa on Wednesday morning.

The collision occurred around 9:20 a.m. at Niagara Drive and Sheridan Street as the group crossed the road. Police said the children, ranging in age from seven months to three years, were accompanied by a daycare worker.

The two-year-old was taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. She is now in stable condition, according to police.

The daycare worker and another child suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to hospital. Three other children sustained minor injuries and were also taken for medical treatment.

Investigators said a 62-year-old woman driving a white Volvo sedan was travelling south on Niagara Drive and turning left onto Sheridan Street when she struck the group. The driver remained at the scene and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police have found no indication of impairment. They are reviewing security footage from the neighbourhood to determine whether speed or distracted driving contributed to the crash.

No charges have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
