A man was hospitalized with serious injuries following a fire involving a lithium-ion battery at a Toronto Community Housing high-rise in North York, officials say.

The fire broke out late Wednesday afternoon at the apartment building at 2999 Jane Street. Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop said early Thursday that a lithium-ion battery caught fire and exploded.

Jessop noted that numerous lithium-ion batteries and e-bikes were being stored at the scene.

The incident may have displaced two people, and Toronto Fire Service investigators have been contacted to investigate the cause of the fire.
