According to Collingwood’s fire chief, discarded cigarette butts in a garbage caused a fire that resulted in $1 million in damage to a home, leaving several people displaced.

Emergency crews responded to the scene on Lynden Street around 10 p.m. Sunday, finding heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control.

Given the extent of the damage, the Ontario Fire Marshal has been alerted, though it’s unclear if an investigator will be assigned to the case.

While no injuries were reported, the fire has displaced six people.
