Emergency crews were called to Casey House in downtown Toronto at around 2:46 p.m. Saturday after an e-scooter caught fire inside the facility. Toronto Fire Services confirmed the blaze was quickly extinguished.
Paramedics reported that ten people were treated for minor injuries, though it was unclear how many required transport to hospital. The specialty hospital, which serves people living with or at risk of HIV and is located near Jarvis and Isabella streets, temporarily evacuated 12 inpatient clients as a precaution.
According to Casey House communications director Lisa McDonald, the fire began in an unoccupied inpatient room and is believed to have been caused by a lithium battery. She noted that e-bikes and e-scooters are prohibited inside the building. Outpatient services are expected to resume as planned on Monday, with staff continuing to monitor the situation over the weekend.
