An 18-year-old man from Guelph was hospitalized Monday afternoon after being struck by a transport truck at a busy city intersection.

Guelph police say the man and his 18-year-old girlfriend were crossing at Gordon Street and Stone Road around 4:40 p.m. when a transport truck began turning left from Gordon onto Stone Road. Police say the young man saw the truck approaching and managed to push his girlfriend out of harm’s way before being hit himself.

The woman was not injured. The man was taken to a Hamilton hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An air ambulance was requested but was ultimately not required.

Police say the truck driver was aware of the pedestrians and tried to stop but could not avoid the collision. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The intersection, located near the University of Guelph campus, was closed for several hours and reopened just after 7 p.m. No charges have been laid, and the investigation is ongoing.
