Two people were hospitalized after a two-alarm house fire near Kensington Market in Toronto on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to a two-storey home near Bathurst Street and Dundas Street West around 12:30 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the second floor, where a man and woman were rescued from windows using ladders.

The man suffered life-threatening injuries, while the woman was treated for minor injuries, including smoke inhalation. Toronto Fire said the blaze, which started in the second-floor kitchen, was brought under control, but the upper floor sustained significant fire and water damage.

Thirteen residents have been displaced and offered assistance with temporary housing. Bathurst Street was closed in the area while crews remained on scene to monitor for hot spots. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and is not considered suspicious.
