A head-on collision in Barrie’s south end has resulted in an impaired driving charge and sent two people to hospital.

Emergency crews responded to the crash on Fairview Road around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, with police, firefighters, and paramedics attending the scene. Two occupants from one vehicle were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while those in the other vehicle were treated on site and did not require further medical care.

Investigators say the collision occurred when a southbound vehicle lost control and struck a northbound vehicle. During the investigation, officers reportedly discovered open alcohol containers in the southbound vehicle, leading to an impaired driving probe.

A 71-year-old Barrie man has been charged with impaired operation under the Criminal Code of Canada. Fairview Road remained closed for several hours for investigation before reopening shortly after 12:30 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing.
