A 20-year-old woman has died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Queensway West near Mississauga Hospital late Saturday night, Peel Regional Police say.
Investigators said the woman was crossing the road outside a designated crosswalk when she reached the centre median, fell into the westbound lanes and was run over by an approaching vehicle. She was taken to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries, where she later died.
Police said the driver initially left the scene but returned about eight minutes later. He was arrested and charged with failure to remain causing death before being released unconditionally as investigators continue to examine the circumstances.
Authorities are working to determine whether the driver’s initial departure was intentional or whether he was unaware a collision had occurred. The area around Queensway West near Confederation Parkway was closed for several hours as police investigated.
