A 29-year-old man from Oshawa has been charged with impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of a collision that left two children seriously injured.

Durham Regional Police responded to a crash on Taunton Road near Stevenson Road North around 9:10 p.m. on Wednesday. The collision involved a 2000 Ford Mustang and a 2016 Hyundai Elantra in a T-bone crash. The driver of the Mustang then fled the scene on foot but was quickly located and arrested.

The man faces five charges, including impaired operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and failing to remain at the scene causing bodily harm. He has been held for a bail hearing.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene to assist the four occupants of the Hyundai. The 41-year-old driver suffered minor injuries, while a 33-year-old woman was extricated and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Two boys, aged 10 and 5, sustained serious injuries and were transported to a Toronto-area hospital. The 10-year-old is in stable condition, while the 5-year-old remains in serious condition.

Three passengers in the Mustang were treated at the scene and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Anyone with information is urged to contact Durham Regional Police.
