The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating a crash involving a dump truck and a school bus in Oro-Medonte that left three students and a driver injured Thursday morning.

The collision occurred around 7:30 a.m. on the northbound Highway 11 ramp from Forestview Road. Police say an unmarked OPP vehicle with emergency lights activated was entering Highway 11 north at the time, when a dump truck and a school bus collided.

According to the SIU, the officer stopped on the off-ramp at Forestview Road, leaving the vehicle partially in a lane. Investigators say a northbound school bus was unable to get around the police vehicle and had to stop. A dump truck then struck the bus and rolled over. Emergency crews say the driver of the dump truck had to be extricated from the vehicle.

The school bus, operated by the Simcoe County District School Board, was serving students in the Twin Lakes area at the time. The driver of the dump truck and three youths on the bus were taken to hospital following the crash. One of the youths suffered serious injuries.

The off-ramp remains closed as crews continue cleanup efforts, and drivers are being advised to avoid the area and expect delays.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Update – On April 23, police confirmed that a 16-year-old girl on the bus sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
