A 37-year-old motorcyclist is dead following a crash in East York early Tuesday that police believe may have involved street racing.

Investigators say the man was riding with a group of motorcyclists travelling southbound on Bayview Avenue near Pottery Road shortly before 12:30 a.m. when the collision occurred.

According to police, one of the motorcycles struck a black Honda CRV that was heading northbound, causing the rider to lose control. The man was thrown from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the other riders who were travelling with him left the area following the crash.

Bayview Avenue was shut down in both directions south of Pottery Road for several hours while investigators examined the scene. The roadway reopened shortly before 7 a.m.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
