Toronto police say charges have been laid against one driver following a fatal midtown hit-and-run that claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman.
The incident occurred around 7:15 a.m. near Eglinton Avenue East and Dunfield Road, close to Yonge Street. Police say the woman had just finished grocery shopping and was crossing the street when she was struck by two vehicles travelling in opposite directions.
She was pronounced dead at the scene. Both vehicles initially left the area.
Later Wednesday morning, the driver of the westbound vehicle, identified as a white Hyundai Venue, turned himself in to police around 11:30 a.m. Toronto resident Hamid Abdul, 48, was arrested and charged with dangerous operation causing death and failing to remain at the scene of a fatal collision. He is expected to appear in court on Friday.
Investigators have not yet released details about the second vehicle involved and say the investigation is ongoing. Police are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact investigators or provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
